The Maine Association of Broadcasters
The Maine Association of Broadcasters was formed in 1947 "to cultivate a friendly spirit of cooperation in matters of common interest" among Maine broadcasters.
According to the Preamble to the MAB Bylaws, our purpose is "to promote broadcasting in Maine, to exchange information of mutual interest and value, and to protect and assist our members whenever necessary."
Our mission is to help Maine broadcasters manage change.
As a professional organization we offer members the following benefits: Legal Services: MAB has retainer relationships with Davis Wright Tremaine, one of the nation's leading communications law firms, and with Charles C. Soltan, Esq., a noted Augusta attorney. These attorneys are "on call" to MAB member stations for advice on a variety of broadcast- and business-related issues. Government Relations: MAB represents its members' interests in Congress and at the Maine State House, as well as in FCC and state rulemakings. We track legislation and regularly communicate with our federal and state lawmakers on issues of concern to the broadcast community. Education: MAB sponsors seminars each year on topics ranging from sales skills to new technologies. Members and associate members receive preferred pricing for all MAB seminars. The MAB is always looking for interesting, informative, topical subjects. If you have any suggestions, please contact us! Annual “Best of Maine” Awards program: MAB sponsors annual awards to recognize Maine's best in news, programming and creative services in both radio and television. From commercials and PSA’s, to best radio personality, to the MAB Hall of Fame and Broadcaster of the Year awards, Maine broadcasters of distinction are saluted each fall. Addressing Important Issues: Through our Public Education Partnership Program, the MAB helps non-profit organizations and government agencies reach the citizens of Maine with their important public-awareness messages. This highly successful program enables qualifying organizations to utilize the power of radio and TV stations across the state. MAB News: Through our website, our printed directory, and our e-newsletter, the MAB works hard to communicate with its three constituencies: member stations and associate members, the citizens of Maine, and public policymakers. Critical Issue Updates: By email, by telephone, by snail mail, the MAB keeps its members alerted to issues of concern to the broadcast community. In addition to providing alerts, the MAB also includes background on issues and, most importantly, contact names and numbers for reaching out and personally “touching” decision-makers. Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program: In cooperation with the FCC, MAB sponsors this program of voluntary compliance with federal regulations. Upon certification of compliance, a participating station is exempt from unannounced FCC inspections for three years. Fellowship. Networking. Camaraderie: Call it what you will, but who better to talk things over with than someone who faces the same problems and issues you do? Besides which, MAB events are fun!
MAB members are encouraged to bring questions and concerns to the association. The MAB staff is in touch with other professional organizations and can research answers and solutions for broadcasting issues.
MAB's Washington attorney, David Oxenford of Davis Wright Tremaine, and our Augusta legal counsel, Charles Soltan, are available for consultation to MAB member stations. MAB President & CEO Suzanne Goucher coordinates all contact with David and Charlie.
